How to Open a POSB Bank Account for Your Domestic Helper in Singapore (2026 Guide)

Paying your domestic helper's salary in cash with no record is one of the most common — and most damaging — mistakes Singapore employers make. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) strongly encourages electronic salary payment because it produces a clean, time-stamped paper trail that protects both employer and helper if a dispute ever escalates to TADM or the Employment Claims Tribunal. The simplest way to get that paper trail is to open a Singapore bank account in your helper's name, and the most popular choice is a POSB account.

This 2026 guide walks you through exactly how to do it: which POSB account to apply for, what documents you and your helper need to bring, how to set up an automatic GIRO transfer from your own account, and what to do if the application is rejected. We also compare POSB with DBS, OCBC and UOB so you can pick the right product the first time.

Why your helper needs a Singapore bank account

A local bank account is not legally compulsory for a Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) — but it is the single best piece of evidence you can produce if a salary dispute ever arises. Here is why it matters in 2026:

  • MOM salary record requirement. Employers must record the salary paid each month and obtain the helper's acknowledgement. A GIRO transfer to her own account creates that record automatically.
  • Dispute protection. If your helper later claims she was unpaid, a bank statement settles the matter in seconds. Cash with a signed receipt is acceptable but far weaker evidence.
  • Helper's safety and savings. Carrying months of cash around the house is a theft and loss risk. A bank account also lets her save and remit only what she chooses.
  • Remittance flexibility. Once she has an account, she can use Wise, BigPay, RemitOne, Western Union or the bank's own remittance channel to send money home cheaply.

POSB Foreign Worker Account — eligibility and features

POSB (which sits under DBS) is the bank most FDWs use in Singapore because it has the largest ATM network, the lowest minimum balance, and the simplest paperwork for work-permit holders. The product most helpers open is the POSB Payroll Account — a basic savings account designed for workers who receive a monthly salary credit.

Key features (2026)

  • Minimum initial deposit: S$1 (effectively zero — bring a small note just in case)
  • Fall-below fee: Waived when the account receives a monthly salary credit of S$500 or more via GIRO
  • ATM card: POSB Everyday Card or basic ATM card issued on the spot or by post
  • Digital banking: Full access to the DBS digibank mobile app once Singpass-free registration is completed
  • Remittance: Built-in DBS Remit to Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, India and Sri Lanka at competitive FX rates

Who is eligible

  • Holders of a valid MOM Work Permit (FDW class)
  • Passport must have at least 6 months' validity remaining
  • Helper must be physically present in Singapore for account opening
  • Employer's NRIC or FIN is required as part of the verification

Documents required from helper and employer

Bring everything in originals — POSB will sight them and may take photocopies. Missing one document is the most common reason for a wasted branch visit.

Step-by-step: how to open the account

There is no fully online channel for FDW account opening in 2026 — biometric verification still requires a branch visit. Plan for one to two hours including waiting time.

  1. Pick a branch. Any DBS or POSB branch works. Branches inside heartland malls tend to be faster on weekday mornings than CBD branches.
  2. Take a queue number. Select "Account Opening" — not "General Enquiry".
  3. Present documents. The teller will photocopy the Work Permit, passport and your NRIC.
  4. Sign the application form. Both helper and employer (as referee for some branches) sign. The helper provides a specimen signature.
  5. Place the initial deposit. S$1 minimum; pay in cash at the counter.
  6. Receive temporary account details. The 10-digit account number is generated immediately so you can set up GIRO the same day.
  7. ATM card. Issued instantly at most branches, or mailed to the employer's registered address within 5-7 working days.
  8. Register digibank. Helper downloads the DBS digibank app and registers using the new card number and a one-time PIN — no Singpass needed for Work Permit holders.

Alternative banks compared

POSB is the default, but the other three local banks all accept Work Permit holders.

Setting up automatic salary transfer (GIRO from your account)

  1. Log in to your own bank's app.
  2. Go to Transfer → Add Payee → Local Bank Account.
  3. Enter the helper's full name (exactly as on Work Permit), bank (DBS Bank Ltd — POSB falls under DBS), and 10-digit account number.
  4. Save the payee, then create a recurring/standing instruction for the salary amount, monthly, on the same date each month (most employers use the 7th — see our salary guide).
  5. Set the description as "Salary [Month] [Year]" — this appears on her statement and counts as the salary record MOM expects.

FAST and PayNow transfers between local banks are instant and free for individuals in 2026.

Remittance — sending money home

  • DBS Remit (inside digibank): Free transfers to Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka. Same-day delivery to most beneficiary banks.
  • Wise: Mid-market FX, low flat fee.
  • BigPay / YouTrip: Multi-currency wallets useful for those who travel home occasionally.
  • Western Union / MoneyGram / RemitOne / Lulu Money: Counter-based remittance shops at Lucky Plaza and City Plaza.
  • Bank-channel telegraphic transfer: Slower and more expensive than the options above.

What if the application is rejected

  • Work Permit expiring within 3 months — renew first, then reapply. Use our work permit check guide.
  • Passport with under 6 months validity — renew at her country's embassy.
  • Name mismatch between Work Permit and passport — bring the IPA letter and ask the teller to escalate.
  • Existing dormant account from a previous employer — POSB can reactivate it.
  • Employer not present — some branches require the employer to sign in person. Call ahead to confirm.

As a licensed agency (EA Licence 24C2628) we routinely accompany clients to the branch when documentation is unusual.

ATM card collection and PIN setup

  1. Card and PIN mailer arrive in separate envelopes (PIN mailer 1-2 days later).
  2. Helper activates the card at any DBS/POSB ATM by inserting it and entering the mailed PIN.
  3. She is prompted to change the PIN to a 6-digit number of her choice. Do not ask her to share the new PIN with you — it defeats the purpose of the account.
  4. Show her how to check her balance and download mini-statements.

Bank account opening checklist

  • Work Permit card (valid, ≥ 3 months remaining)
  • Passport (≥ 6 months remaining)
  • Employer's NRIC / FIN (original)
  • Signed employment contract or IPA letter
  • Local Singapore mobile number for the helper
  • S$1-S$50 initial deposit in cash
  • One to two hours blocked out for the branch visit
  • Your own banking app installed for same-day GIRO setup
  • First salary date and amount agreed (see salary guide)
  • Awareness of FDW levy obligations — see FDW levy explainer

Opening the account is a one-hour task that prevents years of potential disputes.
